Simsbury author Louis Arthur Norton will lead a discussion of his recently published book, Captains Contentious, which surveys the lives and military accomplishments of five captains in the nascent Continental Navy. A native of the old seaport of Gloucester, MA, Louis Arthur Norton is a professor emeritus at UCONN. He writes frequently on maritime history topics. Creative Writing Workshop with Mathew Brennan - Wed. June 3rd, 7pm

Mathew Brennan is a novelist and screenwriter from Tempe, Arizona. His short fiction has received many awards. He earned his undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and Biology from Colgate University and is currently finishing his MFA from Arizona State University. He has won fellowships to teach abroad and is a former Prose Editor at the Hayden's Ferry Reveiw. 11th Annual Garden/Kitchen Tour! - Friends of the Farmington Library

Saturday June 13th: 10am-4pm ($20.00 in advance, $25.00 the day of the tour)
Tickets will be availble after May 18th
Tour includes: a Village colonial, 3 homes in the Williamsburg neighborhood, a stained glass windowed Unionville home, a hilltop home, and a Hillstead Museum tour. Luncheon and boutique vendors will be at the Hillstead Museum.

Bus Tour - June 2 Museum Mile- New York City - $38

The Museum Mile trip to New York City is planned for Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Each person will be given information on the nine museums located within a mile of each other on 5th Avenue, a map, and information on the museum restaurants. Take this opportunity to visit a museum new to you or revisit an old favorite. The bus will depart from the Library at 7:45 am and leave the Metropolitan in New York at approximately 3:30 pm. The cost of the trip is $38.00 (museum admission and lunch are “on your own”). Registration deadline is May 9, 2009.

West Hartford Artist Linda Webber is art curator for the University of Connecticut Health Center. She received her BA from Boston University and Master of Education from University of Hartford. Linda's acrylic, impressionistic, mixed media paintings, and photography depict her interpretation of the visual world. Linda is an Interior Designer and has previously taught elementary through college art. Her paintings will be featured in the Library lobby during the month of May. Farmington Resident & Illustrator Janice Hector and writer Mollie Wilson have just published an educational children’s book titled Hooray for Heros. The book chronicles America’s greatest heroes in rhyme and imagery. Janice Hector will discuss her illustration techniques, her experience in publishing children’s books, and will sign copies of the book. Farmington resident Evan Cowles trekked around the Manaslu circut, following the ancient trade route from the Budhi Gandaki river, proceeding over the snow covered Larke La Pass, with an altitude of 16,000 feet, and ending in Tibet. His breathtaking photographs document the journey.

Wednesday November 5th, 1-3pm: Author Talk with Martin Schiller, Holocaust Survivor

Martin Schiller is author of Bread Butter and Sugar, A Boy's Journey Through Post-War Europe. This gripping memoir describes the unfolding horror of the Nazi genocide as seen through the eyes of a child. Schiller was six when his family fled Poland. They were interned as slave laborers, and later deported to Buchenwald. He has dedicated all proceeds from his book to Holocaust Remembrance Charities. To register call: (860) 673-6791

David Leff is a freelance writer from Collinsville, CT. His essays and fiction have appeared in Newspapers and magazines. The Farmington Library has planned a bus trip to MOMA'S Van Gogh exhibit. Throughout his career, Van Gogh attempted the task of representing night by light, setting the impressionist trend of "translating" visual light effects with various color combinations. Ever had difficulty understanding art or felt uncomfortable talking about art when it comes up at a cocktail party? This workshop will introduce you to a brief history of contemporary art. Jeffrey Levine, poet, publisher and teacher is the 2008 Artistic Director of the Hill-Stead Museum's Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. He will present a guest lecture at the library the night before opening night of the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. He will read selections from his own poetry, he will discuss his work with the festival, and his work in the publishing field as founder of Tupelo Press. Author Russ Hoyle is a Farmington resident. His book "Going to War" explores how misinformation, disinformation and arrogance led America into Iraq. His interest in the run-up to the Iraq War and the weapons intelligence controversy began in 2001 at the Daily News where he watched the 9/11 story unfold first hand. Virginia Willis is a French-trained chef, television producer, food stylist, cooking teacher, food writer, and former Martha Stewart Living's kitchen manager. Up Coming Bus Trips: Wednesday June 25th - Boston Children's Museum

The Farmington Library has planned a bus trip to the Boston Children's Museum. This trip is great for children & parents. Bus departs library parking lot at 8am and returns by 6:15pm. Tuesday June 17th, 7pm: Village Vibrations Concert

Concert #2 in the Summer Concert Series "Village Vibrations" held at the Barney Branch. Steel drums, congas, ukulele, the hawaiian lap guitar, and a variety of exotic percussion instruments will set the stage for the ulimate beach party. Ethnic music from the islands will mix with Jimmy Buffet, The Beach Boys and Harry Belefante. Bring a lawn chair and picnic. In case of rain, concert moves indoors to the reading room. Alison Larkin is an international celebrity, author, actress and comedian. She is a regular on the British stage, with many appearances on Broadway. Saturday March 1st, 2pm: Spring Gardening Series with Mary Anne McGourty: Gardening in the Shade

Mary Anne McGourty and her husband Fred owned Hillside Gardens, a prestigious nursery in Norfolk, CT specializing in uncommon perennials and garden design. Their showcase garden was featured on PBS television's "Victory Garden" and on Home and Garden TV's "Great Gardeners" series. Articles by Mary Anne have appeared in American Horticulturist and several Brooklyn Botanic Garden handbooks. She edited Taylor's Guide to Ground Covers (Houghton, Mifflin). Rose Frett is owner of Dream Travel and Escapes Travel Agency. Born in Montserrat in the Eastern Caribbean, Ms. Frett has had a life-long passion for travel. Her company has priority status with the major cruise lines, including: Cruise West, Princess, World Leading Cruise Lines and Norwegian. She has worked closely with these major cruise lines to develop programs that enhance fundraising efforts for non profits. Saturday March 29th, 2pm: Guest Speaker Jeremi Suri - Author of Henry Kissinger and the American Century

Jeremi Suri is Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and author of the recently published Henry Kissinger and the American Century. (Harvard University Press, 2007) His articles are published in major newspapers including the San Fransisco Chronicle, The Washington Times, The Wisconsin State Journal and Chosun Ilbo (South Korea). Suri is co-editor of a major book series on "America in the World."

The History News Network has named Suri as one of the nation's "top young historians." He is also one of the Organization of American Historians' "distinguished lecturers." Suri's research and teaching have received numerous prizes, including the Phi Alpha Theta Best First Book Award. Suri's work is re-shaping views of how political power is forged in a globally connected age. He has recently been named as Smithsonian Magazine's "Top Young Innovator in the Arts & Sciences."
