Poetry Contest! - Deadline for Entry July 10th

The Farmington Library is sponsoring a poetry contest, open to teens and adults. The contest features prizes for various categories and age groups(prizes include gift certificates, autographed poetry books, recognition in library publicity/materials) Contest will be judged by library staff and director. Presiding judge is Jeffrey Levine, Artistic Director of the Hill-Stead Museum's 2008 Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. Wednesday June 4th, 7pm: How to Put Pizzaz in Your Business Writing - Seminar led by Tricia Stuart

Tricia Stuart is a former reporter and teacher. Since 2005 she has been a freelance writer and has published a novel, a cook book, a memoir and various articles. Tricia Stuart teaches writing workshops and offers professional writing services and coaching. Wednesday June 4th, 7pm: Family Fishing Program

The last in a 3-class fishing instruction program will be led by certified instructors from the DEP's Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education Division. The classes will cover tackle terminology, rod & reel assembly & care, fish habitat, anglers rules & regulations, fish identification, hands-on casting practice, educational videos, etc. To Register call: (860) 673-6791

Thursday June 5th, 2pm: Afternoon at the Bijou - Vintage Hollywood Film Series "In the Good Old Summertime"

Judy Garland and Van Johnson are romantic pen pals, only they don't know it. What they do know is they work in the same music shop, and they are completely out of tune with each other. Tuesday June 10th, 6:30pm: Jeffrey Levine - Writing/Publishing Workshop and Guest Lecture/Poetry Reading

Jeffrey Levine, poet, publisher and teacher is the 2008 Artistic Director of the Hill-Stead Museum's Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. He will present a guest lecture at the library the night before opening night of the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. He will read selections from his own poetry, he will discuss his work with the festival, and his work in the publishing field as founder of Tupelo Press. Wednesday June 11th, 7pm: Russ Hoyle - Author Talk/Book Signing

Author Russ Hoyle is a Farmington resident. His book "Going to War" explores how misinformation, disinformation and arrogance led America into Iraq. Russ Hoyle is a former senior editor at the New York Daily News, Time Magazine and The New Republic. His interest in the run-up to the Iraq War and the weapons intelligence controversy began in 2001 at the Daily News where he watched the 9/11 story unfold first hand. Saturday June 14th, 10am: 10th Annual Kitchen and Garden Tour - Sponsored by the Friends of the Farmington Library

Seven homes - kitchens and gardens, buffet luncheon, vendor boutique at the Stanley Whitman House at 37 High St. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of tour. Luncheon is $10. Funds benefit the Barney Library Restoration. For tickets and information call the library: (860) 673-6791

Thursday June 19th, 2pm: Chefs & Books - Featuring Virginia Willis author of "Bon Appetit, Y'all"

Virginia Willis is a French-trained chef, television producer, food stylist, cooking teacher, food writer, and former Martha Stewart Living's kitchen manager. She is the daughter and grand daughter of consumate Southern cooks. Virginia Willis will talk, autograph her books, and will serve tasty treats based on recipes from her cookbook, Bon Appetit, Y'All: Recipes and Stories from Three Generations of Southern Cooking. Wednesday June 25th, 7pm: Treating Migranes with Traditional Chinese Medicine - Lecture by Herbalist Lisl Meredith Huebner

Lisl Meredith Huebner is a Nationally Board Certified Chinese Herbalist and a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild. She is also an Auriculotherapist and Certified Medicinal Aromatherapist, a renowned diagnostician, teacher and published writer in private practice for over a decade. Up Coming Bus Trips: Wednesday June 25th - Boston Children's Museum

The Farmington Library has planned a bus trip to the Boston Children's Museum. This trip is great for children & parents. Bus departs library parking lot at 8am and returns by 6:15pm. The cost of the trip is $30 for adults and $26 for children (all ages). Registrations/Reservations for the trip are required by May 5th. Register for the trip by calling: (860) 673-6791

Art Exhibits During the Month of June:

Community Room: An exhibit featuring Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy by students of Yumei from the Farmington Valley - 1st grade - 8th grade

Barney Branch Library Events in June:

Tuesday June 17th, 7pm: Village Vibrations Concert

Concert #2 in the Summer Concert Series "Village Vibrations" held at the Barney Branch. Steel drums, congas, ukulele, the hawaiian lap guitar, and a variety of exotic percussion instruments will set the stage for the ulimate beach party. Ethnic music from the islands will mix with Jimmy Buffet, The Beach Boys and Harry Belefante. Bring a lawn chair and picnic. In case of rain, concert moves indoors to the reading room.
