Poetry Contest! Entry Deadline July 10th The Farmington Library is sponsoring a poetry contest, open to teens and adults. To enter, submit up to 3 original poems, typed with your name, age and phone number. For more info call: (860) 673-6791 Wednesday July 9th, 7pm: Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket Jan Mann's Cruising Connecticut with a Picnic Basket, makes it easy to plan day trips that are delightful… and delicious. The book features 40 suggested outings, and provides a picnic menu, picnicking tips and creative recipes. Jan will discuss her book, and provide a sampling of tasty picnic treats based on recipies from her book. Thursday July 10th, 7pm: What's Hot in the Contemporary Art World? Ever had difficulty understanding art or felt uncomfortable talking about art when it comes up at a cocktail party? This workshop will introduce you to a brief history of contemporary art. The workshop will be led by guest speaker Aloyse Blair, a new generes artist based in Brooklynn, NY. Aloyse Blair has studied contemporary art at Kenyon College in Ohio, Parsons in Paris, The San Fransisco Art Institute, Instituto des Artes in Havana Cuba, and the Pratt Institute in Brooklynn. To Register call: (860) 673-6791 Monday July 14th, 7pm: Chefs & Books: Featuring Jordan Stein, Executive Chef of the Pond House Restaurant in Elizabeth Park Jordan Stein will discuss his culinary adventures and will lead a discussion on his favorite book...The Autobiography of Alice Waters. Stein, Executive Chef of the Pond House Restaurant in Elizabeth Park, emphasizes organic produce, local farm freshness, seasonal and unexpected flavors and textures in his cuisine. He admires Alice Waters because she is a strong advocate for farmers markets and for sustainable agriculture, and is the head of the Slow Food Movement in the US. Food/Samples for this event will be generously provided by the Pond House Restaurant. To register call: (860) 673-6791 Tuesday June 22nd, 7pm: Herbs & Diet, Complimentary Cancer Care with Herbalist Lisl Heubner Lisl Huebner is a Nationally Board Certified Chinese Herbalist and a Registered Herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild. She is also an Auriculotherapist and Certified Medicinal Aromatherapist, a renowned diagnostician, teacher, and published writer in practice for over a decade. Wednesday July 16th, 7pm: Fresh Voices Poetry Reading - Winners of the Young Poets Competition - Sunken Garden Poetry Series Five outstanding young poets, the winners of the "Fresh Voices" Young Poets Competition in the Sunken Garden Poetry Series, will present a poetry reading at the Farmington Library. Audiences of all ages are welcome to attend. To Register call: (860) 673-6791 Wednesday July 23rd, 7pm: Chefs & Books Featuring Arthur Schwartz Using his native New York City's Jewish food culture as a lens, author Arthur Schwartz takes us on a mouth-watering, soul stirring tour of Yiddish American Cooking. Anyone interested is welcome to attend this first writers group meeting/workshop. To register call: (860) 673-6791 Wednesday July 30th, 7pm: Poetry Reading by Bob Jacob West Hartford author Bob Jacob will read from his new book titled Perspective. Written in response to his work as a Hospice volunteer, Bob Jacob's poems depict moments of epiphany, utter honesty, and spontaenous joy experienced by those passing from one world to another. These poems will surprise you with their unorthodox insights. To register call: (860) 673-6791 Up Coming Bus Trips: Tuesday August 19th - Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Yankee CandleThe Farmington Library has planned a bus trip to the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield, MA, and to Yankee Candle. This trip is great for children & parents. Bus departs library parking lot at 8:15 am and returns by 5 pm. The cost of the trip is $30 for adults and $25 for children (all ages). Registrations/Reservations for the trip are required by July 18th. Register for the trip by calling: (860) 673-6791 Art Exhibits During the Month of June: Lobby: An exhibit of paintings by Sarah WadsworthCommunity Room: An exhibit featuring Painting and Photography by Audrey Becker Barney Branch Library Events in June: Tuesday July 15th, 7pm: Village Vibrations Concert Concert #3 in the Summer Concert Series "Village Vibrations" held at the Barney Branch. Jazz and contemporary numbers will be performed by Farmington's own Sebastian Massa, alto saxophonist, pianist and vocalist, Billy D'Eugenio, drummer and Albert Tomasso, pianist.
